CRETA Natural Fiber Arts Women’s Co-Op

The CRETA (Centro Regional De Tecnología Apropiada) Organization of Indigenous Women has for more than 20 years been working with various communities in the Amazon. CRETA works with indigenous craft organizations and is active in keeping alive the ancient ways of indigenous cultures, especially techniques of natural fiber and dye crafts. CRETA buys from many villages along the Amazon tributaries so that they can grow, harvest, and supply raw materials--such as palm fibers, bark cloth, fiber crafts, fabrics, dyes and vegetable leather--to artists from around the world. This encourages the continuous techniques of spinning natural fiber and dyeing with jungle plant dyes.

Living Amazon Peru supports CRETA Co-Op by facilitating the teaching of classes (to our Amazon tour guests as well as local indigenous women’s groups) on natural fiber arts and crafts; fostering the sales of these natural fiber arts and crafts in Iquitos, throughout the Amazon region, and abroad; as well as providing displays and art show opportunities for their unique and colorful natural fiber arts and crafts.
